"Be careful what you wish for..."
It’s such a pleasure to meet you, Elizabeth, I’ve been looking forward to it ever since Alice first mentioned you,” Arthur shook her hand firmly and smiled warmly.
“I, uh, seem to have missed out on a lot here. When did you two meet?” Elizabeth tried to control the edge in her voice.
Arthur grinned at Alice, “We met exactly 3 months ago. And we’ve been dating ever since.”
“Oh,” Elizabeth tried to keep a polite smile pasted on her face. Three months? Had it really been that long since she had spoken to Alice? That was how much she had missed?
Alice returned his beatific smile with one equally as giddy.
Arthur managed to tear his eyes away from Alice and turned his smile back to Elizabeth, “I should probably head out. You have a lot of catching up to do and I don’t want to get in the way. Plus, I need to pick up some stuff from work.” he added.
Elizabeth let out a little sigh of relief, “Well, it was really nice to meet you, Arthur. I hope I get the chance to get to know you better very soon.”
Arthur turned to Alice, “We’re still on for dinner tonight, right?”
“Yes, definitely!” Alice said happily.
Elizabeth glanced hastily away as they shared a quick kiss.
“See you soon, Alice, and you too, Elizabeth!” Arthur waved as he reached the sidewalk.
As Arthur disappeared into the distance Alice threw herself into Elizabeth’s arms once more. “I’m so, so glad you’re back! It’s been too long!”
Before Elizabeth had a chance to express any of the myriad emotions running through her head Alice pulled away and grinned at her. “Come inside,” she exclaimed, “Let’s get comfy and catch up!”
Elizabeth sank uneasily on to the couch and regarded her friend, “So, how did you and Arthur meet exactly?”
“It’s… kind of a funny story,” Alice said blushing.
“So I was making my morning grilled cheese like I usually do…”
“And I swear I only looked away for a second…”
“And it sort of… caught on fire. I was totally terrified and forgot all of my fire safety training in the stress of it all but thankfully the fire alarm went off.”
“And then he came bursting in to save me. I can’t explain that first sight of him blazing through the flames…”
“We got talking about grilled cheese and he was so sweet and funny…”
“But he had to leave before we exchanged numbers. So I remembered what you said about getting out there and fighting for what you want and - and I took things into my own hands…”
“Oh, god,” Elizabeth groaned.
“It was the second craziest thing I’ve ever done – but it worked! After we both got over our crippling embarrassment we got to talking and we really hit it off.”
“So after he got off work we went out to dinner.”
“And we’ve been going out ever since!” Alice beamed.
“Wow, Alice,” Elizabeth murmured, “So, he – he makes you happy?”
“Yes! Oh yes, he’s just so wonderful! I’ve been so happy these past 3 months! It’s just been – heavenly! And I just can’t wait for you to get to know him and appreciate him too! Wait, why don’t you come with us to dinner tonight?”
“What?” Elizabeth yelped, “Tonight? I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why not?” Alice crowed enthusiastically, “It’ll be fun and I know Arthur wouldn’t mind!”
“I really don’t want to be a third wheel.”
“Pleeease!?! I really want you and Arthur to get along. You two are the most important people in my life! Plus, I have the perfect dress you could wear!” Alice pleaded.
Elizabeth felt herself caving under the pressure of that face. “Oh, alright," she huffed.
“How do I look?” Alice asked, “Is it too much?”
“You look amazing, Alice! Truly, you are so beautiful!” Elizabeth said softly.
“You don’t look half bad yourself, gorgeous!” Alice teased.
She grabbed Elizabeth’s hands and squeezed them, “I’m SO glad you’re back. Now things are just perfect!”
Their hands slid apart.
Alice skipped to the door, “Now all you need is a little splash of lipstick and we’ll be all set.” Elizabeth watched her go quietly.
“This is going to be so much fun!” Alice squealed. I hope you’re right, Elizabeth thought, her friend’s hand feeling heavy on her arm…
End of Part 1
- I apologize for this uneven little half-update, but I filmed this AGES ago and then either hallucinated writing the text or totally lost my work. I had to rewrite it and to be honest I think it suffered from my lack of cohesion/matching pictures to words, but I've since had to change my picture taking method because of computer problems so I couldn't go back and add to what I've got. I still haven't shot the next half but when I do I will be using a different file format so things will look a little different (hopefully for the better).
- Thank you all for sticking with me :)
- A silly little interlude will be coming soon!
